You must complete all the required fields and bring it with you on the day of the adoption, or you can fill out the adoption application the morning of the event. This is a closed facility and only open to the public during planned adoptions times a year. Periodically, horses will be placed on the Internet Adoption but horses may not be viewed prior to adopting. Skip to main navigation Skip to main content. As part of a cooperative agreement between the BLM and the Colorado Department of Corrections, inmates in the WHIP feed, care for and train horses for adoption while gaining meaningful and marketable experience they can use when they reenter the workforce.
While the Canon City facility holds adoptions for both trained and untrained mustangs, the WHIP offers trained horses to people who may not have the experience, time or facilities to train a mustang on their own. Generally, inmates at Canon City finish training about seven to 10 horses each month. Something we strongly believe is that the horses will not lie to you or for you.
So in essence, the horse holds the inmate accountable. If one does not gain the trust of the horse, they will not progress. Inmates also get to help take care of something that responds back to them. If you treat the horse and coworkers with dignity and respect, the rewards can be life-changing. As far as the public, We see it as a win-win situation.

It takes thousands of dollars a year for feed, hundreds of dollars a year for annual and bi-annual vaccinations and god help you if you need some serious veterinary care……. Horses need our help, they helped us build this country and have suffered terribly since their introduction to man except for Native Americans , but purchasing a horse is WAY different from purchasing a dog or cat and people need to do so with their eyes WIDE OPEN.
The sad thing is that the BLM horses that came from the prison were about the best horses you could find anywhere and it helped not only horses, but the men who trained them. They should NOT discontinue this program, but spread it to other prisons for the sake of horses and mankind.
